Particulate Nature of Matter

1. What is Matter?
Ans. Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space. Everything around us air, water, books, and even we are made of matter. Matter is made up of tiny particles called atoms and molecules.
1. पदार्थ क्या है?
उत्तर: पदार्थ वह चीज़ है जिसमें द्रव्यमान (mass) होता है और जो जगह घेरती है। हमारे आस-पास की हर चीज़ - हवा, पानी, किताबें और यहाँ तक कि हम भी - पदार्थ से बने हैं। पदार्थ बहुत छोटे कणों से बना होता है जिन्हें परमाणु (atoms) और अणु (molecules) कहते हैं।

2. Write the states of Matter?
Ans. There are three states of matter:
A: Solids
B: Liquids
C: Gases
2. पदार्थ की अवस्थाएँ लिखिए?
उत्तर: पदार्थ की तीन अवस्थाएँ होती हैं:
A: ठोस
B: द्रव
C: गैस

3. What determines the different states of matter?
Ans: Interparticle spacing and the energy of particles.
3. पदार्थ की विभिन्न अवस्थाएँ किस बात पर निर्भर करती हैं?
उत्तर: कणों के बीच की दूरी और कणों की ऊर्जा।

4.What are solids?
Ans: A solid is one of the main states of matter, having a fixed shape, a fixed volume, and tightly packed particles.
Example: Ice, Wood, Iron or steel, Stone or rock, etc.
4. ठोस क्या हैं?
उत्तर. ठोस पदार्थ की मुख्य अवस्थाओं में से एक है, जिसका एक निश्चित आकार, एक निश्चित आयतन और कसकर भरे हुए कण होते हैं।
उदाहरण: बर्फ, लकड़ी, लोहा या स्टील, पत्थर या चट्टान, आदि।

5. Write the properties of solids?
Ans: Properties of Solids are :
A: Fixed Shape: Solids do not change their shape easily because they are rigid.
B: Fixed Volume: They take up a set amount of space that does not change.
C: Tightly Packed Particles: The atoms or molecules are very close to each other.
D: Strong Attraction: The forces pulling the particles together are very strong.
E: No Free Flow: Particles cannot move around freely; they only shake or vibrate in one place.
F: Hard to Compress: You cannot squeeze a solid into a much smaller size.

6. Define ‘particulate nature of matter’?
Ans: The particulate nature of matter means that all matter is made up of tiny particles. These particles are constantly moving and have space between them.
6. 'पदार्थ की कणिकीय प्रकृति' को परिभाषित करें?
उत्तर: पदार्थ की कणिकीय प्रकृति का अर्थ है कि सभी पदार्थ अत्यंत सूक्ष्म कणों से बने होते हैं। ये कण निरंतर गतिशील रहते हैं और इनके मध्य रिक्त स्थान होता है।

7. What are Liquids?
Ans: Liquids are a primary state of matter with a definite volume but no fixed shape. They take the shape of whatever container they are in.
7. द्रव क्या हैं?
उत्तर: द्रव पदार्थ की एक प्रमुख अवस्था है जिसका आयतन निश्चित होता है, लेकिन आकार निश्चित नहीं होता। वे जिस भी बर्तन में रखे जाते हैं, उसी का आकार ले लेते हैं।

8. Write the properties of Liquids?
Ans: Properties of Liquids are:
A: Definite Volume: Liquids maintain a constant volume under normal atmospheric conditions.
B: Fluidity: Unlike solids, liquids can flow from one place to another. Both liquids and gases are called fluids.
C: Low Compressibility: You cannot easily compress a liquid because its particles are already quite close together.
D: Particle Arrangement:
The particles in a liquid are held together by weaker forces of attraction than in solids, giving them more freedom to move.

9. What are Gases?
Ans: Gases have neither a fixed volume nor a fixed shape. They are far apart from each other. The inter particle attraction between the particles is negligible, and they can move freely.
Examples: Air, helium, nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, etc.
9. गैसें क्या हैं?
उत्तर: गैसों का आकार और आयतन दोनों अनिश्चित होते हैं। इनके अणु एक-दूसरे से बहुत दूर होते हैं। अणुओं के बीच का आपसी खिंचाव न के बराबर होता है, जिससे ये स्वतंत्र रूप से इधर-उधर घूम सकते हैं।
उदाहरण: वायु, हीलियम, नाइट्रोजन, ऑक्सीजन, कार्बन डाइऑक्साइड, आदि।

10. Write the properties of Gases?
Ans: Properties of Gases are:
A: High Compressibility: Because gas particles have large empty spaces between them, they can be easily compressed into smaller spaces.
B: Low Density: Gases are much lighter than solids and liquids.
C: Fluidity: Gases flow easily.
D: No Definite Volume: They will expand to occupy the entire volume of whatever container holds them.

11. What is interparticle spacing?
Ans:  Interparticle spacing refers to the average distance between adjacent particles in a material. This spacing helps determine the state of matter: solid, liquid, or gas. Interparticle attractions between Solids > Liquids > Gases.
11. अंतर्कण दूरी (interparticle spacing) क्या है?
उत्तर: अंतर्कण दूरी किसी पदार्थ में निकटवर्ती कणों के बीच की औसत दूरी को दर्शाती है। यह दूरी पदार्थ की अवस्था: ठोस, द्रव या गैस को निर्धारित करने में सहायक होती है। अंतर्कण आकर्षण बल: ठोस > द्रव >
गैस।

12. Is every speck of this fine chalk powder still composed of the same substance, or has it changed into something else on breaking or grinding?
Ans: Yes, even after breaking or grinding, each speck of chalk powder (fine-grinded) is the same as the previous state because this change is a physical change in which only the size of chalk changes, not any chemical change occurred.

13. Are the units of chalk obtained in this manner considered the smallest units of chalk?
Ans: No, the obtained units of chalk in the process of grinding are not the smallest unit. Every unit of chalk is even consists of constituent particles, which are the basic units of chalk.
13. क्या इस प्रकार प्राप्त चॉक के टुकड़ों को चॉक की सबसे छोटी इकाई माना जाता है?
उत्तर: नहीं, पीसने की प्रक्रिया में प्राप्त चॉक के टुकड़े सबसे छोटी इकाई नहीं होते हैं। चॉक का प्रत्येक टुकड़ा स्वयं घटक कणों से बना होता है, जो चॉक की मूल इकाइयाँ हैं।

14. Do gases also have a fixed volume?
Ans: No, gases don’t have a fixed shape or volume. The volume of gas changes with the amount of closeness of particles or the interparticle attraction between particles.
14. क्या गैसों का भी निश्चित आयतन होता है?
उत्तर: नहीं, गैसों का कोई निश्चित आकार या आयतन नहीं होता है। गैस का आयतन कणों की निकटता या उनके बीच के आकर्षण बल के आधार पर बदलता रहता है।

15. Sugar and sand are both solids. Why does sugar dissolve in water, but sand does not?
Ans: Because water can break down sugar particles, which reduces the total volume of the mixture. Whereas sand particles have a rigid crystal structure, which cannot be broken down by water molecules, and hence settle down in water and increasing the total volume.

16. TRUE AND FALSE:
A: Melting ice into water is an example of the transformation of a solid into a liquid. /
बर्फ का पिघलकर पानी बनना, ठोस के द्रव में बदलने का एक उदाहरण है।

B: The melting process involves a decrease in interparticle attractions during the transformation. /
पिघलने की क्रिया में, अवस्था बदलने के दौरान अंतर-कण आकर्षण बल घट जाता है।

C: Solids have a fixed shape and a fixed volume./
ठोसों का एक निश्चित आकार और एक निश्चित आयतन होता है।

D: The interparticle interactions in solids are very strong, and the interparticle spaces are very small./
ठोस पदार्थों में कणों के बीच की अन्योन्य क्रियाएँ बहुत प्रबल होती हैं, और उनके बीच का स्थान बहुत कम होता है।

E: When we heat camphor in one corner of a room, the fragrance reaches all corners of the room./
कमरे के एक कोने में कपूर गर्म करने पर, उसकी सुगंध पूरे कमरे में पहुँच जाती है.

F: On heating, we are adding energy to the camphor, and the energy is released as a smell.
जब हम कमरे के एक कोने में कपूर को गर्म करते हैं, तो उसकी खुशबू कमरे के सभी कोनों तक पहुँच जाती है।

Anskey:
A: TRUE (सत्य)
B: TRUE (सत्य)
C: TRUE (सत्य)
D: TRUE (सत्य)
E: TRUE (सत्य)
F: FALSE (असत्य)

17. Why do gases mix easily, while solids do not?
Ans: Gas particles are far apart from each other, and that’s why they move very fast in all directions. Gases have weak intermolecular forces, so they don’t attach. Due to this reason, gas particles spread easily around other particles.

18. When spilled on the table, milk in a glass tumbler flows and spreads out, but the glass tumbler stays in the same shape. Justify this statement.
Ans: In this case, milk is spilled on the table, and it spreads around the table because its state is liquid. Liquids can take the shape of their surrounding because their molecules are free to move. This is the reason the milk flows around the table. Whereas the glass tumbler’s shape does not change because it is a solid.

19. Why does the water in the ocean taste salty, even though the salt is not visible? Explain.
Ans: Ocean water tastes salty because it contains a high concentration of dissolved salts, primarily sodium chloride (common table salt). These salts are not visible because they are dissolved at a molecular level.

20. Grains of rice and rice flour take the shape of the container when placed in different jars. Are they solids or liquids? Explain.
Answer: Grains of rice and rice flour are considered solids, despite appearing to take the shape of their container. This is because each grain retains its shape and volume, even when mixed. The “flowing” behavior is due to the ability of these small, irregularly shaped particles to move past each other with minimal friction.
