चींटियों के कान नहीं होते, इसलिए वे सुन नहीं सकतीं. पैरों की धमक और उसमें पाए जाने वाले तंत्रिकाओं की मदद से ये आसपास की हलचल के बारे में पता लगाती हैं. इनके घुटने और पैर में कुछ खास सेंसर लगे होते हैं, जिसकी मदद से चींटियां आसपास की गतिविधियों के बारे में फौरन पता लगा लेती हैं. इनके कुनबे में रानी चींटी की उम्र सबसे ज्यादा होती है यह 20 साल तक जिंदा रह सकती है. साथ की चींटियों की उम्र महज 45-50 दिन का होता है. कहा जाता है कि रानी चींटी के मरते ही कुछ ही दिनों में पूरा कुनबा तहस नहस हो जाता है.
